RPE Competent Person
Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) Training
Course Description:
This one-day Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) Training course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to select, use, and maintain respiratory protective equipment effectively and safely. The course covers the importance of RPE in protecting workers from airborne hazards such as dust, fumes, gases, vapours, and asbestos fibres, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations (COSHH etc). Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the different types of RPE, when to use them, the importance of carrying out fit testing and maintenance.
Course Objectives:
- Introduction to Respiratory Hazards: Understand the health risks associated with airborne contaminants, including dust, chemicals, fumes, and asbestos fibres, and the importance of respiratory protection in preventing exposure.
- Legal Requirements and Regulations: Learn about the relevant regulations and legal requirements surrounding the use of RPE, including the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 and specific guidance on RPE use for different industries.
- Types of Respiratory Protective Equipment: Gain an overview of the different types of RPE available, including disposable, half-mask, full-face, and powered air-purifying respirators (PAPR). Understand which type is suitable for different hazards and work environments.
- Selection of RPE: Learn how to select the correct RPE based on the level of airborne contaminants, the type of hazard, and the nature of the work. Understand the importance of ensuring the RPE fits the wearer and provides adequate protection.
- Fit Testing: Understand the process of fit testing to ensure that RPE provides an adequate seal and protection for the wearer. The course includes practical training on performing fit tests and recognising when RPE needs to be adjusted or replaced.
- RPE Maintenance and Care: Learn how to properly maintain, clean, and store RPE to ensure its longevity and effectiveness. Understand how to inspect RPE for damage or wear and how to replace filters and components.
- Practical Session: Participate in a hands-on practical session where participants will:
- Practice donning and doffing different types of RPE.
- What a fit test is for different respirators to ensure a correct fit.
- Learn how to inspect, maintain, and clean RPE in line with manufacturer guidelines.
- RPE Usage in the Workplace: Understand how to properly use and store RPE in the workplace and ensure that employees are trained to use the equipment correctly, including checking for a good seal and recognising when RPE is not functioning properly.
- Record Keeping: Learn about the importance of keeping records of RPE use, maintenance, and fit testing, and the legal requirements for documentation.
Who Should Attend:
This course is designed for workers, supervisors, and health and safety personnel who are required to wear or oversee the use of respiratory protective equipment in industries such as construction, demolition, asbestos removal, manufacturing, and any other sector where airborne hazards are present. It is also ideal for those responsible for ensuring RPE compliance and safety in the workplace.
Duration:
The course is 1 day in length, combining theoretical instruction and practical training to ensure participants are fully competent in selecting, using, and maintaining RPE safely.
Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate of competency, demonstrating their ability to select, use, and maintain respiratory protective equipment effectively and in compliance with relevant health and safety regulations.
